A distant relative of mine by the name of Samuel Claridge lived in Hemel Hempstead in the 1840s and 1850s and had a bakery in Queen Street, no. 97. I realize it may not be around anymore, but is there someone who can tell me where it would be located today if it still existed? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hello . I was born near Hemel and lived there 1941 -1943 then moved to London all my great Aunts and Uncles lived in Hemel, I loved to visit and spent every School holiday from 1946. I remember the train that run through Hemel twice a day and walking along the railway bank to bluebell wood it was a lovely place . I used to walk from St Pauls Road to St Albans along the narrow lanes. There was only a few shops in the high St and we would walk to the canal. I saw the new buildings go up and the fields disapear the new town grew so quickly I still think of Hemel as my second Home and have fond memories.

Anyone go to Corner Hall boys school around the time Rodney Owen was head boy? 1957/1960. I used to listen to Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee and Gene Vincent over at his house with Brian Rance and am trying to remember the names of the shell shocked lunatics that taught us! Nicky Redrupp, Mr Church the headmaster, Mr Jones, Chalky White, Mrs King, and the geography teacher Mr Mayberry come to mind. Anyone who hung with the mods (saw the Who at St Marys Church hall) are you still kicking !

I am researching Hemel H. of the early 1800s. My gggg grandfather John Golsby married Rebecca Dear, 'both of this parish' at St Marys church on 8th July 1800. Presumably living and working in the parish, I wish to learn about the town and surrounding area (manorial estates ? etc) at that time. John was an ostler, Rebecca's work unknown. Can anyone suggest any books of reference on Hemel for this period?

I am trying to trace my father, Michael Joseph Richards who was known to work/lodge in Hemel from early to mid 50s. Does the name rings a bell with anyone - particularly older people - he would be 77 if still alive. He left Ireland to get work in the early 50s and ceased contact with his family in the mid 50s. Only interest that I know he had would have been in local football.

Please. I lived in this town for twenty odd years, growing up. What a dump. Racist, small minded, dull and not a decent restaurant in the place. I'm sure there are some fond memories of the place from certain people pre-war. But as that lot say "everything was better in those good 'ole days" Believe me: Take the rose tinted glasses off and aspire to be somewhere better.

Born 1946, lived in Cattsdells childrens home, (off the old Redbourne rd next door to St. Pauls hospital), what a place. Last to leave & was accused of burning it down!! I was 8 years old. Oh well, could have been sent to Botany Bay!! Anyone remember it? better still, I would love to see old photos of Hemel. Went to the Gazette office a few years back searching you know, they said we had loads of photos, but we had a fire; ironic really!! Chip on both shoulders, so I'm well balanced.

I was born and in Hemel in 1974 and grew up there attending Chaulden Junior School, then Hemel Hempstead School before moving up north in 1990. Since then I have only visited once but will be visiting over New Year this year to hook up with my old mate Jim Birnie. I have many fond memories of my childhood playing footie in Northridge Park and running for Dacorum AC. I wonder if any of my old pals remember me and would like to get in touch. I currently live and work in Japan, but would love to hear from anyone who knew me, especially those from DAC and HH school. Still a diehard Watford fan by the way!

I can remember the Luxor cinema, the Lido water cress beds and the bombers flying very low over our camp school, going and coming back from raids over Germany. Is their anyone who can remember Pixies Hill camp school? I was their for nearly 4 years.
